We want People Ops that feels like a great mechanical watch: you never think about it, and it's never wrong. Imagine the first day at a company where every laptop, login, and handshake worked on the first try. That's the bar. We're looking for a Head of People Operations to lead that work. You'll shape the strategy across People Operations and Total Rewards operations, making everyday work simpler, more reliable, and increasingly agent-enabled. This is a player-coach role. You'll develop the team, set direction, and stay hands-on, especially as you learn Notion. You'll combine operational craft with thoughtful automation, keeping care and human judgment at the center of every sensitive decision. This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We work from our offices on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (our Anchor Days) because we do our best thinking and building together in person. We’re looking for someone who’s excited to work alongside the team during those days. WHAT YOU'LL ACHIEVE: - Be customer zero for AI-enabled operations. Prototype and scale agents on real workflows, with trusted data, the right access, and human review built in. (Yes, we run our own People Ops on Notion. Yes, it's a little meta.) - Build the experience behind the experience. Every hire, change, leave, and farewell runs through the systems you design. - Lead a team that wears many hats. You'll coach, set the roadmap, and still get your hands dirty. No boredom guaranteed. - Join at a moment of growth. Notion is scaling, and there's a real green field to build something simple and lasting. - Work across the whole company. Partner with People, Finance, Payroll, Legal, IT, and BizTech to make handoffs smooth and change stick. - Put agents to work, thoughtfully. Test and scale useful workflows with validation and human review. (Automate the busy work, never the judgment.) - Lead the team and set the roadmap. Clear ownership, clear priorities, and room for people to grow. - Build reliable lifecycle workflows. Onboarding, employee changes, leaves, and offboarding, with clear intake, service standards, and escalation paths. - Run Total Rewards operations. Own routine compensation and benefits operations, from cycle readiness and data changes to Payroll handoffs, with accuracy and good judgment on exceptions. - Measure what matters. Use service, quality, and adoption data to keep improving, with data integrity and audit readiness built in. - Make change stick. Align partners across the company and drive adoption. SKILLS YOU'LL NEED TO BRING: - You've led a People Operations team in a shared services model and built scalable processes in a growing company, while staying hands-on. - You've built People programs and operational processes from the ground up. - You know compensation administration and benefits well, with sound judgment on approvals and exceptions. - You design great systems and processes across HRIS, case management, and lifecycle workflows. (Workday and global experience are a plus.) - You've used AI and automation to improve real work, with privacy, quality, and oversight in mind. - You communicate clearly, hold strong beliefs loosely, and lead people through change with kindness and directness. Notion is committed to providing highly competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. The compensation offered for this role will be based on multiple factors such as location, the role’s scope and complexity, and the candidate’s experience and expertise, and may vary from the range provided below. For roles based in San Francisco, the estimated base salary range for this role is $270,000 - $310,000 per year. We're building one place where your knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side, so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. Millions of individuals, small teams, and large companies run their work on Notion. Notinos (our employees) are customer zero in bringing this future of work to life. 1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but most providers don't accept insurance, making therapy too expensive for most people. Headway’s mission is to fix this by building a new mental healthcare system everyone can access. We started by solving the biggest barrier to care: insurance. The admin work - credentialing, claims, payment reconciliation - is a nightmare. We've automated that. But we're going further. Over 90,000 providers across all 50 states run their practice on our software, serving over 2.6 million patients. We are building the best tools for therapists to run their entire practice, reimagining the experience of finding a therapist, and investing in the platform foundations to enable this at scale, and building much of it with AI. We aren't just a billing layer; we are becoming the platform where care actually happens. We're a Series D company with $325M+ in funding (a16z, Accel, Spark Capital, etc.), looking for exceptional people to help us achieve this mission. We want your time here to be the most meaningful experience of your career. Join us, and help change mental healthcare for the better. ABOUT THE ROLE Headway's People function has scaled quickly, and we're now building for our next phase of growth. We're hiring a Director, People Operations to lead the programs that shape our employees' day-to-day experience — benefits strategy and administration, immigration and leave, payroll, and the Workday roadmap and automation. This is a high-impact role with real ownership: you'll set the direction for how these functions scale alongside the company. You'll report to the Director of Total Rewards and Operations, lead a high-performing team, and partner closely with Finance and Legal. You'll also have a genuine seat at the table in shaping People strategy — this role is as much about influencing the function's future as it is about running it well today. You Will... - Own Headway's benefits strategy end-to-end. Assess our funding model and programming, and design and implement a refreshed strategy for our next phase of growth - Redesign employee support for leave, carrier/claims issues, general benefits questions and immigration to be both high-touch and scalable - Ensure accurate, timely payroll delivery that stays compliant across all states where Headway operates - Lead a proactive overhaul of employee policies and partner with the People Ops leader to streamline employee recordkeeping - Set the strategic roadmap for People Systems (primarily Workday) and partner with Human Intelligence and People Analytics to build agentic, self-service "front door" capabilities - Rebuild contingent worker lifecycle operations on automated foundations. Systematically replace manual, error-prone workflows with automated, AI-native ones across onboarding, offboarding, extensions, and conversions. Measure the reduction in manual effort and escalations over time - Drive change adoption. Bring the People team and broader organization along through program and workflow changes; build the training, documentation, and enablement that make new tools, programs and workflows actually stick. Measure impact over time - Coach and develop a high performing team of Managers and Associates You'd Be a Great Fit If… - You have 10+ years of experience in People Operations or Total Rewards and at least 5 years managing and developing an exceptional team - You've rebuilt People workflows and support systems on automated foundations. You can point to workflows where you eliminated meaningful manual effort, reduced error rates, or improved SLAs through automation - You're fluent in modern data and automation tooling, and you understand how AI fits into the infrastructure layer of People programs — not as flashy features, but as durable, reliable process improvements - You translate ambiguous business needs into a sequenced roadmap. You don't just react to requests, you anticipate what's coming and build for it - You can communicate with clarity across audiences: crisp problem statements and solutions for leaders, specific and actionable guidance for team members - You function well in a fast-paced environment, having experience managing workflows and data for thousands of employees and handling rapid scaling - You collaborate and build credibility across the organization through effective communication, strong relationships and delivery of genuine insights - You are highly organized and have a proven track record of managing highly complex, cross-functional projects with diverse stakeholders - Familiarity with HR technology platforms (Workday, Ashby, etc.) and their integration and API capabilities is a meaningful advantage We believe a team's strength is in its people, and we cannot achieve this mission without a team that reflects the diversity of this problem – across race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, national origin, religion, family status, disability, military status, and experience. You’ll work closely with the Head of People Operations and the rest of the People team to keep things running smoothly and build processes that keep up as we scale. This role suits someone who is proactive, moves fast, and brings solutions instead of questions. They’re resilient when priorities shift, comfortable with ambiguity, and have a bias for action. WHAT YOU’LL DO HR Support & Systems - Triage and respond to employee questions in our HR ticketing system quickly and accurately, and escalate when needed. - Use Rippling day to day to manage employee data and pull reports. Spot data issues and fix them before they cause problems. - Find recurring ticket themes and turn them into self-serve resources or process fixes. Onboarding & Employee Lifecycle - Own new hire onboarding from offer to first day, including paperwork, Rippling setup, and coordination with IT on devices and access. - Make sure every new hire has a smooth, well-organized experience, and keep improving the experience as hiring accelerates. Benefits & Workers’ Comp - Administer employee benefits, including enrollments, qualifying life events, open enrollment, and renewals, and be the first point of contact for employee benefits questions. - Manage workers’ compensation claims from start to finish. Compliance - Manage compliance programs, including audits, harassment prevention training, and other regulatory mandates. - Lead compliance reporting requirements such as EEO-1 and state-specific filings, making sure submissions are on time and accurate. - Maintain internal documentation (policies, calendars, audit trails) and build scalable processes that can flex with our team’s growth. - Support audits and respond to regulatory inquiries with thorough, organized documentation and clear processes. Cross-Functional Partnership - Work with Payroll, Legal, Finance, and IT to give employees a seamless experience. - Jump in wherever there’s an operational gap, and help bring clarity and structure as we grow. WHAT YOU’LL BRING - 3–5 years of experience in People Operations, HR Generalist, or HR Coordinator roles. - Hands-on experience with an HRIS. Rippling is strongly preferred. - Experience administering benefits and managing workers’ comp claims. - Working knowledge of federal and multi-state compliance requirements, including reporting such as EEO-1 and required training mandates. - The ability to prioritize on your own in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift. - A proactive, solutions-first mindset. You notice gaps and fix them without waiting to be asked. - High attention to detail and strong organizational skills. - Excellent written and verbal communication. You can explain HR and compliance topics in a way employees understand. This role is a hybrid position (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) based in San Francisco. WHY WORK AT ABRIDGE?
