SENIOR ENGINEERING MANAGER, OBSERVABILITY ENGINEERING Temporal is an open source programming model that can simplify code, make applications more reliable, and help developers focus on the important things like delivering features faster. We are on a mission to be the reliable foundation of every developer's toolbox, and are building the team that will make that happen. Our values guide us — they are present in how we show up, make decisions, and work together to make an impact. We're curious, driven, collaborative, genuine and humble. Temporal is growing and we are looking for those who share our values, challenge 'standard' thinking, and want to influence our future. If you have a passion for improving the developer experience, building world-class open-source software and communities, and want to be a part of our amazing team, we'd love to hear from you! Companies at the frontier of the AI revolution run on Temporal. OpenAI runs on Temporal, handling millions of requests. Cursor runs its cloud coding agents on Temporal at over 50 million actions a day across 7M+ workflows. Lovable, Abridge, and Hebbia build their agents on it too. In the last year alone, AI-native companies executed 1.86 trillion actions on Temporal Cloud, and the curve is still bending upwards. Backed by a recent $550M Series E at a $12.55B valuation, we are building the durable execution layer the agentic era depends on. Observability is how we and our customers know that layer is holding. This role owns both halves of that problem. Internally, you own the telemetry platform our engineers use to run a multi-tenant service that some of the largest companies in the world rely on. Externally, observability is a product surface. Customers debug their own workflows through what we expose, and the quality of that experience is a key feature of the platform. We are looking for a leader who has run observability at scale, treats telemetry cost and cardinality as first-class engineering constraints, and has the operational rigor to be accountable for live-site outcomes on a platform where reliability is the product. RESPONSIBILITIES - Observability roadmap: Own the team’s technical roadmap and delivery, aligned with broader engineering priorities. Evaluate build, buy, and open-source options, balancing reliability, customer needs, and cost. - Technical leadership: Lead, hire, and grow a high-ownership team of engineers. Guide technical decisions through design and code reviews. Coach engineers, help them grow, and clear the friction that slows them down. - Platform ownership: Own the ingestion, storage, query, and visualization path for high-cardinality telemetry across a multi-tenant, multi-cloud fleet. Enable self-serve capabilities to support a growing Engineering organization. - Operational excellence: Own alerting and incident response tooling end to end. Drive the detection quality, routing, and clear, actionable runbooks that make on-call sustainable, and turn incident reviews into lasting reliability improvements. - Customer-facing observability: Partner with Product and SDK teams on the telemetry Temporal exposes to customers: metrics, traces, and workflow-level diagnostics. Work directly with design-partner customers and integrate what you learn into the roadmap. - Cost, capacity & economics: Own the unit economics of observability: cost per ingested series, per query, per namespace. Set cardinality budgets, drive consolidation where tool sprawl has crept in, and negotiate and manage vendor relationships against clear value criteria. - Partner with Engineering, Product, Security, and Support to resolve competing priorities and deliver shared outcomes. Explain technical tradeoffs and risks clearly to senior leaders and non-specialist partners. QUALIFICATIONS - Proven experience leading engineering teams that build and operate observability, monitoring, or telemetry platforms at scale, with strong operational practices. - Demonstrated success leading engineering teams that build and operate production observability platforms, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and delivery. - 15+ years in software and/or infrastructure engineering, including 7+ years of people management, with demonstrated ownership of delivery and live-site outcomes. - Experience hiring, leveling, and performance management. - Strong distributed-systems expertise with the hands-on judgment to guide architecture and execution rather than guide it from a distance. - Experience operating multi-tenant infrastructure that other people's production workloads depend on. - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience; advanced degree a plus. - Excellent communication skills, with the ability to partner across engineering, product, and leadership and translate customer feedback into a roadmap. REQUIRED SKILLS - Strong leadership and coaching; ability to grow engineers and build a healthy, accountable, high-ownership team, including through reorgs, acquisitions, or platform migrations. - Set priorities and deliver incremental improvements with incomplete information. Make tradeoffs explicit and adapt plans as customer and operational needs change. - Command of the observability building blocks — metrics, logs, traces, profiling, and alerting and the tradeoffs between them at scale. - Time-series and telemetry data fundamentals: cardinality control, retention and downsampling, query performance, and hot/cold storage tiering. - Live-site reliability craft: SLA/SLO definition, on-call, incident management, and postmortem-driven continuous improvement. - Ability to review and raise the bar on technical artifacts (design docs, code reviews) across a distributed-systems codebase. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE - Applying AI/LLM techniques to triage, anomaly detection, or incident summarization, with clear-eyed judgment about where they help and where they don't. - OpenTelemetry at depth: collector architecture, semantic conventions, instrumentation strategy. - The open-source observability stack in production: Prometheus, Mimir/Thanos/Cortex, Grafana, Loki, Tempo, ClickHouse. - Building observability as a product for external developers, not only as internal tooling. - Kubernetes internals and multi-cloud delivery across AWS, GCP, and Azure. - Vendor consolidation or migration programs (commercial APM/SaaS to open-source, or the reverse) with measurable cost and reliability outcomes. - Developer experience or engineering productivity backgrounds - treating internal engineers as customers with a measurable experience. - Prior experience at a developer infrastructure or open-source-based company, where the community is part of the feedback loop. Plaid Link is the front door to modern financial experiences. It securely connects people’s financial accounts to the apps and services they trust, and it’s the foundation Plaid’s product teams build onboarding, payments, identity, and lending experiences on. Link supports more than 12,000 financial institutions and 9,000+ apps and services, is used by roughly one in two adults with a bank account, and is the starting point for approximately 750,000 connections every day. The Unified Link team is now focused on building a single onboarding platform for Plaid’s products. Customers will integrate once through a single API and turn on additional products with a toggle in the dashboard, making it easy to adopt new capabilities and expand their use of Plaid. As the Engineering Manager, you will lead roughly ten engineers through a major transformation: bringing our existing onboarding products together, moving Link’s highest-traffic experiences onto the new foundation without disrupting the traffic they carry every day, and continuing to improve the Link experience along the way. You’ll partner closely with a Principle Engineer and the team’s Tech Lead to set technical direction and sequence the migration, and with Product, Design, and teams across Plaid to make the platform easy to adopt and extend. All while maintaining a high bar for quality and reliability, and growing your engineers through clear priorities, coaching, and feedback. Responsibilities • Set team strategy and the technical roadmap in partnership with the Tech Lead, balancing the platform migration with ongoing improvements to Link • Drive team execution (planning, sprints, delivery) and hold a high technical bar through hands-on involvement in design and code review • Hire, manage, and develop a team of engineers, including goal setting, coaching, feedback, and performance management • Partner with Product, Design, and engineering teams across Plaid to define clear interfaces and make the unified platform easy to adopt and extend • Keep Link reliable and healthy through the transition, making sound tradeoffs between new work and long-term system health Qualifications • 8+ years of experience as a backend or full-stack engineer, with a track record of designing and shipping complex, scalable systems • 2+ years managing engineers, including coaching, performance management, and building a team • Strong technical depth: you can dive into architecture and design details, and credibly hold a high bar for the team • Strong user empathy and the ability to balance technical tradeoffs with product outcomes • Nice to have: experience building consumer-facing products and/or product led growth (PLG) dev tools Our mission at Plaid is to unlock financial freedom for everyone. To support that mission, we seek to build a diverse team of driven individuals who care deeply about making the financial ecosystem more equitable. We recognize that strong qualifications can come from both prior work experiences and lived experiences. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a "normalized" problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. Connect capital investment to product economics by analyzing server costs, deployment timing, useful-life and depreciation assumptions, utilization and capacity across edge, core and accelerated-computing infrastructure, in partnership with Infrastructure Finance and Accounting. Contribute to capital and capacity planning through demand-versus-capacity scenarios, investment trade-offs and forecast updates. Explain how deployment timing and workload mix affect near-term costs and longer-term unit economics. Produce decision-ready reporting on product costs, unit economics and relevant margin drivers. Counsel, Patents & IP

At Lyft, our purpose is to serve and connect. We aim to achieve this by cultivating a work environment where all team members belong and have the opportunity to thrive. This position will manage Lyft's patent function — driving the strategy and day-to-day management of our patent portfolio — while also advising on the company's approach to open source, reviewing technical publications before they go external, and serving as a trusted advisor on IP questions across the business. This position will report to the Senior Director, Associate General Counsel, IP. Beyond the legal chops, we're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys building relationships — you'll spend as much time with engineers and researchers as you will with lawyers, so a warm, curious, low-ego style goes a long way here. We value people who can make patent law feel approachable rather than intimidating, who bring a sense of humor to a fast-moving environment, and who are as excited about celebrating an inventor's first disclosure as they are about closing out a tricky filing decision. This is a great opportunity for someone to come in and manage the patent function at Lyft, working on cutting-edge issues spanning Lyft's global expansion, Lyft Urban Solutions' mobility hardware and software business, and supporting the deployment and expansion of autonomous vehicles on Lyft's network. Responsibilities: Own the patent portfolio end to end for the company — invention harvesting, invention disclosure meetings, portfolio mining, and directing patent application preparation and prosecution by outside patent counsel. Drive patent strategy and drive filing, continuation, and abandonment decisions based on technical merit, competitive landscape, and cost, and own portfolio health and reporting against product roadmaps. Counsel and collaborate with engineering on open source license review and approval for inbound and outbound open source, including license compatibility and compliance risk. Review papers, blog posts, conference talks, and other public technical disclosures for IP and confidentiality risk and relevant counseling. Provide broad-based strategic and portfolio advice as well as counseling key stakeholders in protecting and defending IP rights worldwide. Support IP diligence for partnerships, M&A, and vendor relationships. Train and educate product and engineering teams in intellectual property matters, and build tools, policies, and processes that scale with the business. Experience: 5+ years of patent prosecution experience in a relevant area; in-house patent portfolio building/management experience a plus. Experience advising on open source license compliance. Must be a member of the Patent Bar and have substantial understanding of patent law outside of litigation. Must be proactive, self-directed, detail oriented, organized, and have exceptional communication skills. Adaptable and positive under shifting priorities, with the flexibility to move between deep legal work and lighter-touch, high-volume counseling on any given day. Demonstrate AI fluency and comfort using AI tools in day-to-day work. JD required. BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent technical field. State bar membership. Eligible to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. Sense of humor and comfort with shifting priorities. Benefits: Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options with additional programs available when enrolled Mental health benefits Family building benefits Child care and pet benefits 401(k) plan with company match to help save for your future In addition to 12 observed holidays, salaried team members have discretionary paid time off, hourly team members have 15 days paid time off 18 weeks of paid parental leave.
